Cross-post from Letters from Wilson House
Public service announcement for those in or near Armidale: Jemimah and I are putting on a public lecture on the evening of 26 June about C S Lewis' lesser-known-but-increasingly-relevant book 'The Abolition of Man'. There will be Q & A, and we'll be bringing stacks of books from the Wilson House collection which you can browse and borrow on the night. We hope to see you there! -
Sean T Wilson

Could the way we teach literature turn us into blind ideologues, or unfeeling beasts?

In a series of brief essays published during the Second World War, C S Lewis argued that by failing to teach our children to line up their feelings with the way that God has made the world, our modern approach to education would end up abolishing just what makes us human.

Join us for a free public lecture by Jemimah Wilson about C S Lewis’ challenging and prescient book The Abolition of Man. We will discover that to stay human in our modern techno-culture we must learn not only how to think, but also how to feel.

Jemimah Wilson is one of the directors of Wilson House. She has an Master of Arts from Yale University, and a Bachelor of Arts with First-Class Honours from the University of Queensland. Her writing has been published in American Reformer, Ad Fontes Journal and the History of Philosophy Quarterly. She lives in Armidale with her husband Sean.

The Library goes on the road

This will be the first public event that Wilson House has put on—hopefully, the first of many more!

The Library will be coming out to visit as well—so to speak. Lots of the books from our collection will be on display at the event for you to browse in person and borrow. We will also have a handful of copies of The Abolition of Man available to borrow if you sign up for a free Borrower membership with Wilson House.

We are very excited about this, and we hope we’ll see lots of you there!
